An Eccentric Seeks A Match (USA)

Date: 2009-10-26, 7:33AM CT

Generous people will call me unique and unconventional;
less than generous people will just call me odd or peculiar.
I only drink claret, which I chill first.
And Coke, never Pepsi.
I prefer Dunkin' Donuts’ coffee to Starbucks.
I believe Starbucks burns their beans.
I do not understand why people pay so much money for burnt coffee.
I love national politics.
I am somewhat ambivalent about state and local politics,
even though I know they affect me more directly.
But, I always vote.
I am a fiscal conservative AND a social liberal.
I do not find that to be a contradiction.
I do not believe in contradictions. “If you find one, check your premises.”
Technology-wise, I am an early-adopter.
I sometimes waste money by being an early-adopter.
I am not a team player.
Nor am I a 'joiner.'
I do not believe in “the wisdom of crowds.”
My favorite book: Extraordinary Popular Delusions and the Madness of Crowds.
I’d rather rent a movie and watch at home than go to the movies.
I loved MovieLink.com until Blockbuster ruined it.
I am a blogger.
I am a numbers guy.
I own my own business.
I’m okay if you text message me, but I’ll most likely answer with a phone call or email.
While I’m not big on text messaging, I love instant messaging.
I believe long voice mail messages are rude. Does the caller expect me to take notes?
I am a near-misanthrope and total cynic.
I do know that cynics are really closeted romantics.
I did not believe in love-at-first-sight until it happened to me.
It was unrequited; she needed a Harley & tattoos. I have neither.
I have a SUV and some very nice spreadsheets.
I have four different browsers on my desktop. I wish I used a Mac.
My work requires a PC, but my next computer will be a Mac.
I live with a ten-year-old border collie.
I like most dogs more than most people.
I believe lack of formal training is often used as an excuse for not doing.
I believe in objective truth, even if I sometimes don’t know what it is.
Relativists scare me.
I believe critical thinking is a character trait.
I love Orff’s Carmina Burana, George Gershwin, Leonard Cohen, Enya, and Dusty Springfield.
And The Flower Duet from Lakmé.
And Sinatra.
And Alfred Hitchcock, Billy Wilder, Frank Capra, William Powell & Myrna Loy.
And The Philadelphia Story.
Which taught me that the nautical term 'yar' is far more interesting when applied to people.
I read a lot. Mostly non-fiction, and mysteries for fun.
People who appreciate Gabriel García Márquez will not appreciate me.
I do not watch reality television.
I agree that there are two types of food:
Food that can be improved with chocolate and food that can be improved with bacon.
I believe Frank Gehry is a charlatan and Roger Cohen is an idiot.
I do not enjoy small talk.
I used to get three newspapers and a half dozen magazines; no more.
My favorite magazine is The Atlantic, which I now read online.
I do not fear the lord, but I often fear people who do.
I believe traffic planners are the dumbest people on earth.
After high school, I went to college; if I had to do it over again, I’d join the navy.
If I could choose any place to take a lunch date, it would be “Charlie’s Bunion.”
I believe baseball is boring and soccer is stupid; I do not play golf.
I am decisive, but quick to admit and correct mistakes.
Shallow people make me sick; and no, I do not feel sorry for them.
I find people who are difficult to talk with are usually not worth talking with at all.
I speak rudimentary HTML.
I have written exactly two poems in my entire life; far from brilliant, but I like them.
My favorite expression: Fortune favors the bold.
I am not on Facebook or MySpace or Twitter; I am on LinkedIn.
I posted this list on Craigslist, but it is difficult to use.
And one reason they don’t charge for it is so they don’t have to improve it.
And luckily, I have an industrial strength SPAM filter.
A friend suggests eHarmony; I doubt I'm the eHarmony type.
I really dislike loud, smoke-filled bars.
I did not forget to include my age in this list; I omitted it on purpose.
Finally, while a list about oneself is a necessarily narcissistic exercise,
I can assure you, dear reader, that I am not.
But, this list is a work-in-progress…
And no doubt it explains why I am single.
